SBM is currently seeking Structural/Building Design Technologist Co-op in our London office for an 8-month term (may consider 4-month term) starting May or June 2025. The successful candidate will assist in a wide array of survey field functions dependent on experience and training, including but not limited to calculations, data adjustments, field ties for topographic and various types of cadastral surveys, construction layouts, residential building layouts, site control, differential leveling, boundary retracements, as-built verifications, topographic measurements, quantity verifications, and control networks. The Geomatics Field Tech Co-Op may work on a variety of projects with exposure to all stages of a project from conception through construction.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Take direction from OLS, Project Manager and/or Party Chief to understand the scope of work and critical data items to complete the survey correctly.
  • Use and maintain GNSS equipment, robotic total stations, data collectors, and a variety of levelling equipment.
  • Collecting field data using various survey instruments, and GPS field equipment.
  • Field work to perform high precision surveys such as boundary retracement, SRPRs, Reference Plans, Subdivisions, Condos as well as pre-engineering topographic surveys and construction layout.
  • Adhere to strict quality control practices and safety policies.
  • Daily download of data and prepare extensive field notes and sketches (ie. paper, CAD, etc.).
  • Field layout of stake points including pins, monuments, stakes, hub, and nails.
  • Client interaction while on-site.
  • Communicate errors, problems, and questions to the Project Manager and OLS immediately.
  • Interpret a variety of plans, deeds, sketches, construction and architectural drawings and maps.
  • Coordinate with and support office drafting department when required.
  • Clearly correspond daily with the Project Manager and OLS to ensure smooth operations in the field and office.
  • May be required to use personal vehicle (disbursements to be reimbursed)
  • This role will be primarily site based; some office work may be required.
Qualifications:
  • Enrolled in a Geomatics / Surveying Program, Civil Engineering or other relevant diploma, and eligible for either a 4- or 8-month co-op term with their school.
  • Ability to work in both a team environment and independently.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to communicate well with team members.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Strong organizational, mathematical, and analytical skills.
  • Eagerness to become familiar with industry standards and methods to approach required solutions.
  • Strong attention to detail and expertise in building client relationships.
  • Proficiency and curiosity in all manner of professional land surveying.
  • Unwavering commitment to environmental health and safety in the workplace.
  • High standard of courtesy and respect when dealing with the public, clients, and fellow employees.
  • A valid driver’s license, insurance, and access to reliable transportation for out-of-town travel
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite
  • Experience with AutoCAD is considered an asset
